The Difference Between Ceremonial and Premium Matcha

The Difference Between Ceremonial and Premium Matcha

Matcha has gained popularity in recent years, but not all matcha is created equal. Two of the most commonly available types are ceremonial and premium matcha. Understanding the differences between these can help you choose the right matcha for your needs.

Ceremonial Matcha
Ceremonial matcha is the highest quality matcha available. It's made from the youngest tea leaves, handpicked from the top of the plant. These leaves are steamed, dried, and stone-ground into a fine, vibrant green powder. This grade is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies and is characterized by its smooth, delicate flavor and natural sweetness. Because of its premium quality and careful processing, ceremonial matcha is best enjoyed on its own, whisked into hot water, without the addition of milk or sweeteners. Its flavor profile includes subtle grassy notes and a slight umami taste, providing a pure and refined drinking experience.

Premium Matcha
Premium matcha is a step below ceremonial grade in terms of quality. It's made from slightly older tea leaves and may include some leaves from lower parts of the tea plant. While it still offers a bright green color, the hue might not be as vibrant as ceremonial matcha. The flavor of premium matcha can be more robust and slightly bitter, making it well-suited for use in lattes, smoothies, and other recipes. Although it is less expensive than ceremonial matcha, it still provides a rich source of antioxidants and can be an enjoyable option for daily consumption.

YOON Matcha: Quality in Every Sip
